Erratic automatic shifts, but manual selection works OK Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Thu, 18 Oct 2012 08:09:18 In Reply to: How did you know that all it needed was governor seals?, Bill Homer [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 18 Oct 2012 06:59:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
On my '97 the symptoms were mainly that automatic shifting became erratic but the trans would work fine if you manually selected the gears. I think there was also a delay when putting it into gear. At first I thought it was the end of line as this car has rust problems and would not have been worth putting a tranny in. Then I read about the governor seals, and after replacing them the transmission works fine. You have to wonder how many otherwise-good 9000s found their way to the junkyard because they had this problem.
Rust-free examples are definitely getting tough to find in the northeast, even here in NJ where winters are not as severe as New England or PA. I'm keeping an eye out for one that has minimal rust but is being sold for cheap due to "transmission problems."
