Solution: one exhaust nut was loose Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Wed, 24 Oct 2012 21:02:49 In Reply to: Noise/Vibratons at certain frequencies, Bill Homer [Profile/Gallery] , Fri, 19 Oct 2012 14:04:53 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Somewhat embarrassing, but the cause of this resonance was a loose nut on one side of the cat/flex pipe connection, and the exhaust was acting like a saxophone, i.e. resonating at some wavelength proportional to the length from the engine to the "hole". Either I did not tighten the nut as much as I should have (I have broken one of these studs before, so I'm a bit gun shy and don't wail on it), the nut worked itself loose (I use stainless steel nuts for easier removal "next time" and they don't rust in place as normal steel nuts do), or the joint just settled in/loosened up over a couple of months - one side was the old cat with a rusty mating surface on the flange.
Sometimes it's the easy stuff! On to the next issues.......
