If you can get an extra half turn in one direction, the rack is probably not centered properly, i.e. the length of the tie rod on one side is longer than the other. Your alignment guy should adjust this for you, it's part of doing a good alignment job - basically, you center the steering wheel, add some length to one side, subtract length from the other.
I believe that what prevents the wheel from turning further is the end of the rack. Bearing plates are something like a round wheel with infinite circular travel, and unless they are REALLY worn, they won't exhibit the behavior you described.
