I pried a bad one apart and found the rubber disc inside it had a hole eroded right in its center.
I had read about using plastic bags to replace it, so did. Just cut a fairly big square, drape over the end plug, and push it in. Trim off what sticks out if you don't like the look.
Time will tell on longevity, but I've found plastic bags buried in the ground that have plainly been there for years, still flexible and fine. Out of UV rays, who knows how long they'll last. I'll just pop another piece in when the time comes.
