The 9K is a mid-'80s design that mixes the technologies of its time into an amazingly solid, versatile car. There is nothing like it these days unless you can pony up about 60-large for an Audi A7.
The 9-3 SS is a nice sporty sedan. Have driven them a couple times. They have a light and lively feel and can be nicely tweaked. They feel good, but don't have the same solid feel on all kinds of roads that is standard issue with the 9K. They are competent, but seem to lack personality.
I'd seriously consider a 9-3 if I were looking, but it wouldn't really be a replacement for my '96 9K CSE (especially in it's modified state), because you can't really replace a Saab 9000.
