The clip is in the outer CV joint, buried in grease. If everything goes well in spreading the clip and pulling the axel out all is good. If the clip is ornery and the axel reluctant to come loose, then not fun.
When studying the boots a number of vendors offered, it appeared they were selling the smaller boot to fit the later larger CV joints.
There is something like a 1/4" difference in the CV housing O.D.. ¼” times Pi = about 3/4" stretch of the circumference of the small boot. Too much for me, so instead of taking a chance on getting the smaller boots, I ordered the proper boots from a dealer.
To install the boots with the axel in the car, I disconnected the ball joint and pulled the axel out of the inner tripod, removed the easy to get to tripod clip and bearings (put a finger-less latex glove over the bearings to keep them in place). Then slipped the inner and outer boots off the shaft. If you have the boot for the smaller CV joint I would not try to install them with CV in the car. Even with the axel on the bench, it may take some wresting to get the smaller boot installed. Don't know how long the a smaller boot will last after being stretched over the larger CV joint.
