... and it would take a vast amount of it, as well as of any crap, to rise to the point where the fuel pump draws from. Fuel pump draws from the same point whether it's a full tank or you drive till it runs out. a point fairly far off the bottom of the tank. Wouldn't be much of anything floating on top, maybe a little shredded leaf or something, and screen at pump pickup would probably stop that.
There is a large "deep," over a gallon, of room at bottom of tank below the pickup. That's by design, as a sump for any dirt or water that might get in there, to sink into and remain.
I drained a '96 9000 tank, car about 200,000 miles, after pulling the fuel pump. I got only gasoline, and found no discoverable dirt either, after bailing the tank out with a flattened-to-oval tin can and mopping the remainder out with a clean cloth. Also the Saab filter, coffee-can size, is vast compared to what most makes of cars use and often get by with for the entire life of the car.
So, I wouldn't worry too much about running the car down to the low-warning mark, or even all the way to engine shutoff.
