Other thing to check is the condition of the hose clamps around the gas tank fill area. There are multiple hoses there. On my car most of them had rusted away. I replaced all of the hose clamps. Was not the cause of my fuel odor (was the cracked fitting at the fuel pump), but could cause your problem.
