The perils of cleaning things... Posted by Ryan [Email] (#2222) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ryan) on Sun, 21 Apr 2013 13:30:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
1990 9Ks 2.0L B202i N/T w/ Hall effect distributor... no DIC.
I ran half a can of Seafoam through the three ports on the intake manifold. Extremely slow drip, about 30 minutes on each port. I've got 265K and pretty sure it had never been cleaned out. Blew a ton of smoke, and seemed to have a slight miss as I was running the drip. Buttoned everything up, took the car out and drove it, and the improvement was noticeable... it felt like there was power I'd never had before (at least for no turbo). But the idle was erratic. Sometimes, it would start up and stay at 2K RPMs. Others it would start and stumble, then die. Sometimes I'd get a surge from about 850 to 2000. With the IAC unplugged, it would start and idle with a slight fluctuation. I figured maybe some crud from the intake had gotten in there via one of the two hoses.
I cleaned the IAC well, and jumpered it to confirm the valve was opening and closing. Cleaned it again while opening and closing. All hoses to the IAC and intake are solid. I did replace a few vacuum lines that were suspect, and then found one coming off the bottom of the solenoid clipped on the firewall that was dangling loose, not connected to anything. There is no vacuum to it, but when I suck on the loose end of it, the engine stumbles. Tracing the length/distance of the hose, I can't find anywhere that it would be connected to. I suspect it's been that way for quite and while, and not the cause of these new idle problems. The vacuum hose diagram under the hood is less than helpful, because it seems there's more hoses than are indicated.
Plugs, wires, cap and rotor are new. Unplugging MAF stumbles engine, so I'm assuming it's doing its job.
Checked for intake and other vacuum leaks by spraying everything down with brake clean to see if I got additional RPM. Nothing. Oddly enough, I get this weird feeling that the cat could be plugged up, but I'm leaning toward buggy IAC first...
Any thoughts?
