When I rebuilt my '94 Aero's engine, I liberally applied silicone plumber's grease to these o-rings, hoping that would help to preserve some of the elasticity of the material. I guess we'll see how that goes.
If/when it starts leaking, I'll bring it over to you and we can try the Viton out on it.
