My wife got into a fender bender in her '97 900, and the gekko insurance co. wanted to total it because they valued the car at $2900 and the repair estimated at $3500.
We fought them on it. We provided ample evidence for a higher value. They moved a little bit, and finally offered to value the car at $3200, and then we bought the car back for $300.
I bought another 900 with a blown engine, but good body for $900, swapped the hood, fenders, lights, and bumper, then had the bumper supports pulled, and the car re-painted. I did all the mechanical work myself, but took it to specialist shops for the unibody work and paint.
After selling the donor car for scrap, my net cost was $1600, not counting my time. Given that the insurance co. cut me a check for $2900, that left me $1300 in the black.
It doesn't have to die if you don't want it to.
