Dew... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Fri, 5 Jul 2013 06:17:06 In Reply to: steam coming from radiator area, Name Left Blank, Wed, 3 Jul 2013 16:39:43 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Unless you are leaving a puddle somewhere, losing coolant (or another fluid), or you see it while the car is in motion, the most likely explanation is the morning dew. It condenses on the radiator, and later, when the thermostat opens, and hot coolant starts flowing through the radiator, it evaporates from the radiator. Especially noticeable at stop lights, etc. Rain can also cause the same effect. With no fan constantly moving air past the radiator, it takes the easiest way out, which is through the grille.
Every one of my C900s and my 9000 did this. I haven't noticed it on my 9-5s, but things are a lot different up front with them.
If it is dew, the only preventative is garaging the car.
The ballooning hose should be replaced, but unless the radiator is clogged, there's no reason to worry about it, particularly if it is an aluminum radiator.
