It was a judgement call whether to trust the old seals or install the new ones. I went ahead and pulled out the adapter and put in the new o-rings, cleaned up the mating surfaces real good with some solvent and a rag, used Vaseline on the seals, and so far so good.
Oh, and after charging up the battery the alternator came on line! Looks like I may owe Autozone an apology, the battery was just flat from sitting for months and that apparently kept the alternator from doing its job. (The display indicated only 7.8 cranking volts when I initially fired up!) I'll keep an eye on it, but for now the battery light is out and the display indicates 14.2 volts while running...
