Water Pump Back Side grooved Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Tue, 6 Aug 2013 21:05:14 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I finally started the water pump replacement job on my 1994 9000 CS Turbo - everything is now completely disassembled. In addition to finding a sheared off bolt holding the compressor adapter to the cylinder head (one of three - this should be fun to drill out given the lack of space!), I also found that the back side of the water pump has a half-moon shaped groove, about 1 mm deep, worn into the flat round central section inside of the "nautilus" part, obviously due to a worn bushing allowing the water pump shaft and impeller to get skewed. Has anyone seen this before? How bad is this, i.e. is the new water pump going to suffer from inadequate flow from the larger gap? Here are what I see as the alternatives:
1. Leave it alone, put the new pump front section on and be happy - car has never overheated even with the current marginal pump.
2. Fill the groove with JB Weld (not sure if it will hold up)
3. Find a used replacement part somewhere (not sure if new parts are even available).
Any thoughts on this?
