Jack the car so the wheel is hanging unsupported. Use a pry bar on back section of the control arm and watch how much play or motion there is where the back end of the control arm goes into the bushing. There shouldn't be much.
Unless they are totally shot you won't necessarily notice it when driving, but the steering will be very light and lack feeling on center and as you turn the wheel.
My indy says the stock rubber ones are good for 40K and considers it normal maintenance on a 9K. My poly ones have been on the car for about 30K and are fine. If I get 50K out of them I'm happy and at about $20-25 each it's not a big deal.
In doing the R&R the challenge is that the steel sleeve inside the bushing rusts to the control arm. My indy typically uses an air chisel/hammer to get them off. Then he greases them on install to make it easier the next time.
