I think you're on to something but I don't know how significant it is for a street car. My son's team's 24 Hours of Lemons car has a 9k engine in a 300zx. They have a big intercooler from a diesel ambulance and all sorts of plumbing to the TB. On hot days at the track they were running out of oomph on long straights over 5000rpm. Intake air temp and engine temp were reading hot on their telemetry. They went to bigger injectors and reformed the 3" exhaust for better flow. Last weekend at Loudon the car was running great and kept pulling through 6000rpm. They worked up to first place, but the turbo came loose from the manifold and melted the master cylinder reservoir with hot gas. They lost an hour in the pits but finished 17th overall out of 133.
It's hard to speculate on this stuff without a lot of hard data. The lemons car engine swap had all kinds of unintended consequences. Saab ran 3 stock 1985 9ks nonstop for 60k miles each on the track at Tallledega averaging speeds over 100mph. Seems like a good test of the stock design.
