As to your second question, why is the clutch smoking when it's disengaged?
The compressor clutch is energized ONLY when the compressor's yellow wire has 12v on it. The clutch circuit is grounded through the compressor body itself.
To test the compressor clutch circuit:
Turn the ignition key to the "run" position. Check voltage on yellow wire after pressing the A/C switch on and off. If you have battery power in both positions, disconnect the switch. If the voltage disappears, replace the defective A/C switch. If the battery voltage remains, swap the A/C relay with another and recheck. If the voltage still remains, swap the ACC control head with a known good unit and recheck.
