So I live in northern Utah. The Sundance Film Festival is going on right now, and that brings with it not just filmmakers, but musicians and artists of every stripe. One of the bands attending was a 5 man group out of Liverpool, UK, and they figured while they were at Sundance tearing it up, they ought to film a music video.
How does this relate to me, and my Saab?
Well, on the way home from running errands the other morning, I noticed I was being followed by a rental van. As I pulled up to my house, the van came along side with the passenger leaning out his window, motioning for me to roll down mine.
"Are you busy right now?"
"Yeah, kind of."
"Could we use your car for a music video? It'll just be half an hour."
I pondered this for a minute. I wondered if I'd be reading about other cases of people being mugged or having their car stolen by similar ruses.
"What production company are you with? Are you local?"
The guy told me, and I vaguely remember my wife having auditioned for one of their gigs, so I said Ok.
It turned out that they were looking for something that would be kind of hard to identify, not American, not modern, but not necessarily old either. My white '94 9000 Aero fit the bill.
The plan was to get a few shots of an actress pulling up to an intersection in my car, counting stolen money in the passenger seat beside her, when crossing the walk in front of her comes her boss. An awkward acknowledgement follows. Yes, it's a rip-off (homage) of the scene from Psycho, but it kind of works.
I rode around in the back seat, an impromptu camera assistant, while the actress drove the car. The director/DP asked me what year the car was, and I told him; he couldn't believe it was 20 years old. Later, the actress, having scooted around the block several times to get various shots approaching the specified stoplight, said "This is fun! What kind of car is this?"
In the end, we spent about an hour getting the shots we needed, but we made our day. The director took my card, gave me $20 and said he'd send me a link to the video when it's finished. I'll be sure to share when it arrives - but if any of you see a music video that features an embarrassingly dirty Aero, you'll know who's that is.
