After a little negotiation the agreed price was $4000, which from what I've seen seems to be about the going rate for a real nice 9000. On the face of it this is a lot for a 20-year-old car, but this is a one-owner, always garaged car, rarely driven in bad weather, and it shows. It is in exceptional condition for its age with relatively low mileage and maintenance records available going back to brand new. It drives like a new car. Here in the rust belt there are not many opportunities to buy a car like this so I after a certain amount of soul-searching I went for it.
Saab 9000s can certainly be found for less. I paid only $1500 for my '97 about 3 years ago. But that car has rust issues and had about 280,000 miles on it (over 315,000 now), and I wound up doing quite a bit of work on it. Spent a lot of time under the hood and under the car. ("Sweat equity.")
The new arrival looks like it's not going to need anything for a while but the oil changed at scheduled intervals. The amount of care this car has had over the years is very impressive.
