Loaned younger daughter's car ('99 9-3 )to elder daughter for two weeks while her car ('00 9-3) was in for a surgical procedure. Younger kid was away. I hadn't driven the '99 in some time and only knew that it would be basically OK for a couple weeks before it went under the wrench.
I drive the fixed '00 90 miles away to swap cars, get in the '99 and realize that even after running for 30+ minutes the temp gauge wasn't gonna move much. But even though it was about 5 degrees, the car did have heat--just not a lot of heat. I kept my jacket on for the ride home.
Took it in for it's turn with surgery and they did the stat while it was there. Problem solved.
Moral: believe the gauge and use common sense. In this case the stat was likely stuck at least halfway open: enough to create some heat, but def not enough. And unless the car idled for 20+ mins the temp gauge never went to halfway. Then when driven it dropped to near the bottom in about 5 miles.
