I'm sure that's more or less fine. Do you mean gear oil like 70W-90 type stuff? That's not actually much thicker than motor oil (it's a different rating scale weirdly) and at the least it's bad news for the brass in your engine bearings (I'm not sure how it does with the heat of an engine, or if there are any other compatibility issues). Change your oil once you get it running and you should be fine though
In my experience it's actually fine to start 'dry' and I would bet that's how most shops do it if the have to take the pump off for some reason (by dry I don't mean cleaned with solvent bone dry but just without a priming lube like vaseline). You can crank the engine over with the fuel pump fuse removed (no more than 10-20 seconds or so at a time) until the oil pressure light goes out for extra safety.
