I ignored a heavy leak from the lower timing chain cover area and it got worse while my brother was driving and the engine got ruined.
What happened was the giant o-ring that seals what's known as the oil pump cover age-cracked and made a massive leak.
Diagnose yours first to be sure before doing a job that may not need it of course. Have front crank seal and o-ring been done in recent time already? There are other places it can leak.
The cover itself also holds the front crankshaft seal. On mine that also was leaking and needed replacing. Don't do one without the other.
Passgr. front tire comes off, that side on a jack stand, front half of fender liner comes off, serpentine belt tension gets released and a locking piece put in to hold it, serp belt off, then the 1 1/16" I think it is crank bolt needs to be cracked free, and the harmonic balancer (crank pulley) pulls off. Then there's a giant inside snap ring to be released to get the cover off. New O-ring on cover's outer edge, seal in center tapped out and new one tapped in square. All back together as it came apart. Good time also to put on a new serp belt and its idler and tensioner pulleys.
Another thing to check first of all: Does your low-oil-pressure warning light work? The sender on the back of the block sometimes goes bad and then if you get a bad oil leak and pressure drops, you don't know it and can ruin the motor. When you first turn the key on you should see a lighted outline of an old fashioned oil can on the pictogram at the hood. It will go out when you start the engine. If you don't see such a symbol the first thing you should do bar none is get that sender checked and replaced.
