I cleaned off the whole area with a paper towel and ran the engine for a few minutes, then let it sit. After a few minutes of sitting, oil had pooled at the bottom of the crank seal (see picture). I have not touched the oil pump cover or oil cover o-ring. I only replaced the crank seal. That was about a week ago. What originally happened was the serpentine belt split in half while I driving. It created a hell of a lot of noise, but I was able to get home. The oil soaking onto the harmonic balancer, and then onto the serpentine belt, must have weakened/rotted the belt. You can see in the picture that the rubber inside the harmonic balancer is swelling and oily.
I guess I need to replace the crank seal again. I don't want to replace the serpentine belt again so I'll just leave the car parked until I can get the seal replaced. I don't think an oil pump cover leak could drip on the harmonic balancer and belt. Right? It seems that only the crank seal is lined up so that it could drip right onto the pulley.
Last time I changed oil I used Mobile 1. I wonder if that is too thin an oil? I also noticed that even when the car gets warm, there is that ticking sound coming from the engine - you can hear it in the video. That ticking sound is on all my old Saabs in the first couple minutes after startup, but it should go away. Maybe I should try putting in a heavier non-synthetic oil?
Thanks guys,
Rob
