Hi, I've managed to do it! Large amounts of twist on the key did not get the lid open, so I folded the rear seats forward, crawled in with an extension lamp, and had a look. I managed to get the trim unscrewed and propped it aside so that I could see. If I pulled on the cord that actuates the little servo motor, I could see a small link moving but the catch was not freeing. I couldn't see the catch itself from inside so I started taking out the M6 screws holding the whole mechanism in place. Before I had taken out the last screw it was clear that the boot lid was now able to move. A big push on the inside confirmed this so I got out of the car and Lo! the lid could be opened. It only took about 1/2 hour and like lots of jobs it was easier than I thought it would be.
