I don't think this is uncommon. I heard the end of one of my front springs hit the bottom of the car going down the road. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw it tumbling down the road behind me. This was on a 97 Aero. I went back and found the end of the spring in the roadway. I checked the other side and it had been broken for quite some time. If the spring seat is not rotten, I wouldn't panic. I never changed either of mine as they were Aero springs and not easy to find. It never effected the way the car drove or the alignment. Is there about 4" missing on the bottom of the coil? I would be willing to bet a lot of them are broken and people just don't know it. Your call.
