I have had the engine suddenly cut out several times. Twice it was due to sudden fuel pump failure. Once it was due to a failing DI (though the symptom there was very rough running with little power). The most recent was due to a faulty ignition switch.
It sounds like your fuel pump is due in any event. It was an easy job on my '97, not sure if the '93 is the same or not.
