Just to post resolution for this topic - my 9000 is on the road again. I got a replacement transmission a couple months ago from a '97 Aero, from Hanover Auto Parts here in MN, and got it installed (sadly no space in my garage or indeed time to do it myself). All happy again.
It was interesting how I'd read that without the speedo signal, the ECU would become unhappy after some time and the car would become less driveable. I found that hard to believe, but after about a week, it definitely did become more prone to stalling when coming to a halt at lights etc - like the idle control wasn't quite right.
