I just got off the phone with the service writer at Bay Ridge Saab. The news is not good. They're telling me that, among other things, the TCS computer in my car is shot, as is the throttle body potentiometer. All told I'm looking at somewhere in the area of $3500 to put my car back on the street.
I've broached the idea of sourcing some of the parts independently, which was met with significant resistance by the service writer. They're really nervous regarding the implications on their labor/parts warranty. I suspect they want to soak me on the parts. This is the largest repair bill I've been faced with since I've had the car, and I'd really prefer to see if I can bring it down to a manageable level.
I just spoke to the service manager at Roberti, and he thinks the dealer is doing the typical "replace everything and see if it flies, customer's wallet be damned". I'm going to tell Bay Ridge to charge me for the diagnostic time, and I'll limp the car up to Kingston and let Roberti work on it.
My advice to anyone in New York City thinking about having a car that's not under warranty serviced at Bay Ridge Saab? Don't do it unless you have an unlimited bank account.
I'm really pretty disgusted with this situation. I knew there was a reason to avoid trusting dealers.
