On my car, the motor which provides +12V to the solenoid from the ignition switch, had badly decayed (well technically, it was the insulation which decayed and essentially fell off). This and a little Murphy's Law thrown in caused it to rub against the main power wire to the starter, which unbelievably has no insulation at all for several inches after it comes off the starter. (no idea who designed THAT feature). In my case though, my starter was running nonstop while I was driving! Very disconcerting, and it naturally continued to run after I shut the car off as the solenoid was stil getting power. Let me tell you that is a strange noise to hear, the loud metallic whining coming from your engine bay when everything is off! So check that wire insulation! Could also be a problem internal to the starter itself however (such as the solenoid on it's way out, or just sticking - I do not know if this is repairable). Too bad the starter is such a bear to get in and out, if you are going that far, might as well put a new one in. My last car, a '79 Accord, also gave me starter problems, quite frequently in fact, but at least that one was right on top and could be changed in all of about 10 minutes, if even that long.
