I saw your Oct 21 post about your tranny, and it all sounds quite familiar. I've had two Eriksson 5-spd trannies now for my '91 9kt. The first failed its 2nd gear synchro after 2k miles. Grinding 1st to 2nd if going up to high revs, prevented by double clutching. Matt at Eriksson told me that the synchro has two parts, one which synchronizes the 1-2 shift, and another part to synchronize downshifting, and that these can wear independently.
The folks are Eriksson are very helpful. They rebuilt me another transmission, shipped it free, shipped my core back for me free. The new tranny has notchy shifting into 3rd gear, however, prevented by double clutching :(
Cost is $1400 for the transmission and $100 for shipping both ways. Labor is about $500 for R&R. You'll probably do your clutch at the same time. I think, in hindsight, that I would consider a brand new transmission if I could get one for under $2000. Matt said they don't replace the synchros when they rebuild unless they meet certain wear criteria, which surprised me. The synchros and bearings are THE wear items, so I would have expected them to be replaced regardless.
