Aftermarket Stereo Amplifier Wiring

This is for anyone who has installed an aftermarket amplifier in their 9000. I have a 93 9000 CSE-T, and am working on installing an amp to drive my rear speakers. I'm planning on putting the amp either under the front passanger seat, where the current (very small) stock amp is, or in the rear hatch area. I see a couple advantages and disadvantages of both, would anyone care to comment on what they did and why? Also, I've examined the wiring harness for the stock amp and figured out what most of the wires do - there's a 6-pin square connector, with two of the cables providing the power and the other two as the 2 pair of rear speaker cables. There is also a circular connector with about 6 or 8 pins in it that must be the signal cable, but I'm not sure what each of the pins does. I'm also wondering if there is a turn-on lead in that bundle somewhere, or if the amp is always on, even when the head is off (I verified with a multimeter that the 12-volt power is always on regardless of head power).
Finally, my most perplexing issue is where to run the power cable from the engine compartment to the amp. I found a posting on the newsgroups a from a long time back of someone who ran it through a grommet under the carpet near the driver's side footwell. I've taken off all the carpet and most of the dash panels, and can't find anywhere that appears to be a clear run into the engine compartment, through the firewall. Has anyone found a good place to run this cable?
I apologize for the long message, hope someone with experiance in this area can provide me some tips. Thank you!
