without the bump stop the spring can completely compress, and is followed by a heafty "clank" noise. I'm not sure how much shock travel is left after that happens though. That was my definition of bottoming out, which can be cured by having a good amount of bumpstop left on the shock. It's happened to me on the front springs after hitting a major dip in the road at high speed. The bumpstops are firm enough to stop the spring from completely compressing, which can happen with any lowering spring/shock combo without bumpstops.
