Anyone know the spec's on the Toyota? I'm not sure what year
it was, but it looked fairly new, couldn't have been much more
than two seats, and had a huge wing/spoiler on the rear.
Anyway, despite Saabrina's minor boost issues we had a 'duel' with
one on the local interstate. I could keep up with him from 40-
140 mph. But the front end of the Saab didn't feel all
all that stable above 130 and he seemed to quite easily pull away -
I'm sure new poly bushings might help. Anyway, my '92 has
the '98 engine with a reprogrammed ECU, 3" exhaust, and
a new TurboXS bypass valve. I just installed it yesterday. I
think I might still have a slight pressure leak, somewhere.
The ECU, compliments of TAQ, seems to give maximum
boost of about 18-19 psi in 4th @ 2500-3000 rpm and then
falls back slowly to about 14 psi. In 5th I get about 16 psi @
2500 rpm for short 'bursts', then it'll settle down to 14. There
seems to be a bit of high frequency vascillation at the higher
boost pressures, which I think might be the gap on my NGK's.
They're presently set to about .86 mm (.034"). After reading
Aeroguys' experiences with plugs, I think I'll reset mine down to
.8 mm. And Karl, how do those pressure figures compare
to your experience with TAQ? I have a feeling my pressure leak
was coming from the aluminum tube that runs from the intercooler
to the throttle body. It is not the origninal but came off an automatic.
There's a small (1/4") hose connector near the bottom, where
a hose most have run to an automatic. I clumsily plugged that
connector with a bolt. I've since put some teflon tape on the threads
and it seemed to have helped a little, although I guess I should
search the salvage yards for the proper aluminum tube for the
standard transmissions. However, like JJ once said, it's fun
having these boost problems - gives you a good excuse for a
few WOT runs down the highway!
