Yes, the chain has been replaced twice on my -92 2.3i. First time the chain broke and the engine was rebuilt. It seems according to receipts that half of the costs went under warranty at 90k km.
The second time, at 180 kkm, the timing chain as well as balance shaft chain started to rattle and the shafts out of pace. The tensioner was extended to about 16 mm. I replaced both chains, couple of guides and couple of sprockets. Lot of work to access the chains.
Check the tensioner. You'll need to remove upper engine mount, loosen alternator upper mount and remove engine mount bracket to get access to the tensioner . If the tensioner is less than 11 mm extended and your engine doesn't vibrate above 2800 rpms or so and you don't hear rattling noise, you should be safe with your chain, otherwise change it asap.
I believe two main causes are fast driving on the autobahn and long oil change intervals. I change every 10 kkm (don't know about the previous owners) and overfill a bit to splash- lubricate the chains. Overfilling also eliminates valve lifter noise. I was told by a mechanic that the 4.5 litre oil capacity is barely enough to lubricate the big engine an he overfills to 5.
