Jason,
Don't panic. If you purchase a standard, you wouldn't be safe. All trannies go at one point or the other. Don't spend too much time worrying about when the tranny will go. I would suggest the following:
(1) check your transmission oil to see if you have the correct level. A low level can cause this problem.
(2) Let the car warm sufficiently, than take off gradually. Don't punch it or allow it to slam into gear.
I current have a '89 900turbo with a automatic. The car has over 200k on the odo. The tranny is original. That doesn't mean that is the norm. The average life on a automatic is about 125k. On a five speed, it is probably 160k, with proper care, less for a speed demon. No one is ammune from a failing tranny. Don't believe the hype.
