The only way to get rid of fogging on the windshield is to make the water wet out completely on the glass rather than beading up into tiny droplets which forms the haze. What you put on previously will have increased the "contact angle" of the water with the glass leading to the formation of these tiny droplets. Rain-X will have the same effect.
You just need to clean the stuff off - use IPA (rubbing alcohol) - or Windex should work too. If you want you can then add an anti-fog coating like you use for swim goggles, but this shouldn't be necessary once it's properly clean.
As a side note, auto suppliers are currently working on permanent coatings for the interior of windshields to prevent them from misting up at all - or at least in most circumstances.
