'88 9000 slave cylinder leak

I have an '88 9000 that appears to have a leaking slave cylinder. The car sat for about 1 year and the leak began about a month after I started driving it again.
Does anyone know if it is common for 9000 slaves to begin leaking after prolonged storage? The clutch and master cylinder were replaced 20,000 miles ago (3 yrs.). Also, do these leaks ever stop on their own? The leaking is much worse when the car sits overnight but is not nearly as bad when the car is warm and the clutch is being used from normal driving.
Also, I am curious as to how the clutch can even operate with a leak? If the car is cold it only takes a short while (maybe 1-2 hours) for all the fluid to leak out. How can the hydraulic system generate enough pressure to operate the clutch if there is such a large breech in the slave cylinder seals?
Finally, does anyone know what type of seal failure causes these leaks? Do the seals usually have a split or crack? Or do they just get dry and allow the fluid to seep past?
I know that these questions are just shots in the dark but any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Chris
