Rear Defroster

My 1989 9KT rear defroster has shut down on me, and I cannot determine why. I was driving home in a huge snow storm last week, and I had to cycle the defroster several times, as it was snowing heavily, and I was practically at a standstill for 2 hours.
I noticed at some point, that the light was not indicated on the dashboard, but it was on the ACC unit. I checked the fuse, it was intact, but I changed it nonetheless. I can hear a relay clicking somewhere behind the glovebox/ACC unit when I press the button. The wires are still attached to the grid, and there is no noticeable break in the grid.
It was working for the first hour while I was driving home, and there was nothing up against the rear window to pull the wires out, or scratch the grid.
What else can I do to trace the problem??? It's only the start of the winter, and I don't want to have to scrape ice off of the back window!!
Confused in Cleveland!
