I just replaced my driver's side front window regulator today. If your window is moving independently of the cable, it means the bracket with two holes that moves the window up and down is no longer attached to the cable.
Mine did that Sunday, when I went out clean my engine. I opened the door to pop the hood, and when I closed the door the window slid down all the way.
I used duct tape to hold it up, until I did the replacement today. If you have to replace the regulator, once you have the new one in place, temporarily connect the power wires and use the motor to move the carrier
up. I used three strips of duct tape across the top of the door to secure the window, until I could line up the brackets and bolt them together.
The new regulator zips up and down nicely. The other reason to do a temp connection on your wires is to figure out which way works correctly with the button.
