I know Bob replaced his intermediate shaft three times before getting the right one. I did it twice, because of the same engine change-out and not realizing the rear engine mount bracket is different between an automatic and a 5 speed. And one of the two times it left me stranded 500 miles from home in Columbus, Ohio. Paid a ransom to have the car sent back to NJ on flatbed.
The dog bone upper mount do have to come out. For the '94 model, I didn't have to undo the ball joint on the passenger side. But have to separate the steering knuckle from the front passenger side strut.
Other than using the wrong rear engine mount bracket which could make the intermediate shaft fail. I don't see how it could otherwise. But your description to remove it is right on the money.
Not mentioned is the fact I have to loosen the power steering pump to access the rear engine mount. Of course to move the pump means removing the sepentine belt. I'd loosen the driver side engine mount at the end of the transmission too, since you'll be rotating the engine somewhat.
