Capacitor next to coil

On my 88 9000T there is a capacitor mounted next to the ignition coil. This past weekend I noticed the wire had completely broken off the capacitor. Don't know how long it's been that way but the car runs fine. Called my local parts counter and the guy said he did not have one in stock but I should not be too concerned since it is only for radio interference suppression.
Is that really the case or does this capacitor serve some other purpose other than reducing radio static? I plan to replace it anyway but I'm curious.
