Don't Polish Off NuFinish, Rain-X? Leave Raw Layer?

Good Idea, Bad Idea, or Neither: Leave the raw layer of NuFinish (or wax or other polish or Rain-X, etc.) on, i.e., don't polish off, leave the swirl marks. Erstwhile Rationale: If a one micron layer after polishing off is good, then surely a five micron layer before polishing off is even better---more protection and longer lasting, no? (I am just making up these thicknesses, but you get the idea.)
Of course it wouldn't look good, but who cares. Function and practicality and unique look over form and convention is the Saab way, right?
The only reason I can think off why this might not be a good idea is that the mechanical act of polishing off the initial layer is what actually creates the desired, hard, protective, waterproof layer. But this is just pure speculation. Any chemists or pseudo-chemists here?
