I have 2 9000's a 92 and 96 both with auto trans. I don't consider the tranny to be any worse than other auto trannys, they are very resposive and quick to down shift. You can avoid the trannys weak point, frying of the governor seals, by avoiding long and /or fast driving in reverse (that includes spinning the wheels in reverse). Backing out of the driveway at idle is OK, just don't back up at 10 - 15 MPH for half a block like I did. The governor seal repair is relatively easy. Yes, the design is dated but was constantly enhanced. The most annoying thing is the 4 cyl vibration at idle, my 96 is worse than the 92. Otherwise the 2.3 turbo engines are very responsive and not held back as much at lower speeds as the 9-3 and 9-5. If you want a sporting car with large interior, (it's rated as a large car by the u.s. gov. and is larger inside than the 9-5) that is good highway cruiser, and not too large for around town, go for it. Note, my son just replace the shocks and springs on his 99 9-3 because the stock suspension was too loose. It rides and handles more like a 9000 now.
