I agree with Michael in that a good thin grade of oil is key in getting your engine to turn over and it also needs to leave a good film for those first few seconds while the oil pump is coming up to pressure. Granny used to floor the gas pedal when she started her car summer and winter causing Dad and I to winch at the telepathic screeching of her engine bearings and pistons!
Once there is a good grade of winter viscosity oil in the crank case, a warm battery is the next thing to wish for. Have you ever seen a battery warmer? On some farm equipment we would bring the battery into the furnace room in the basement for charging and to warm it up. Granted that was when all else had fail and the sucker wouldn't start for anything. It was great exercise, toting that battery back out and clamping the cables back on, but it would spin that engine like it was summertime. Warm on!
