I'll bet that when you pull the release lever, there is no resistance, just like it was still locked.
There is a linkage from the lock mechanism up by the license plate going down to the latch that hold the trunk closed. The linkage uses a plastic ball and socket joint, and has been known to pop off. If it pops off, nothing you do up at the release lever, by hand, key, or remote, will do any good. So busting out the lockset will only destroy the lock, it won't open the trunk.
The latch can be opened from inside the trunk. I'm not that familiar with the CD, but is there any way to remove the backseat? Perhaps you can call the dealer and they can tell you. There must be some trick that will gain you access. In hatch versions, you fold down the rear seats, clear out all the stuff in the trunk, and you can easily remove the inner hatch panel and actuate the latch. I have to believe that the CD version has some trick for accessing the latch that doesn't involve a cutting torch.

Good luck!
