While I don't profess to know much about the particular system used on Saab clutches, I understand that they, like many cars, use hydraulics to actuate the cluch, so probably the clutch master or slave cylinder is the source of your problems.

I read somewhere that the spring in the clutch master cylinder can break and scrape the inside of the cylinder walls causing hitching, and eventually leakage, at which point you can't release the clutch by pushing on the pedal.

For those who aren't familiar with hydraulic clutch actuators, the way it works is this:

When you push your foot on the clutch pedal, you are pushing a little piston into the clutch master cylinder -- there is no cable for the clutch. The piston pushes hydraulic fluid through a metal line (similar to a brake line) to the slave cylinder mounted on the transmission, and the slave cylinder also has a small piston in it which moves OUT in reaction to the pressure of the hydraulic fluid. The outward movement usually pushes a lever on the transmission to actually release the clutch.

Because of the way it works, if the seals in either cylinder swell, the pedal can get hard and even stick in one position! (I've had this happen with other cars) If something internal breaks, like the springs I mentioned at the outset, they can scratch up the cylinder walls and then the fluid leaks out and you end up with a dead pedal as well.
