The gas gauge is not driven directy from the sensor in the tank - it runs through the EDU computer.
I'll bet it's really cold where you are in the past few days, and the engine is cranking slowly. What's more, I'll also bet that if you drive the car for a while, turn it off, and restart it in a few minutes, things work OK.
If this is what you're seeing, have your battery checked. What's happening is that the battery voltage is dropping very low during starting. The little computer chip in the display isn't getting reset properly on start-up, and it is executing its little software program wrong ("running off into the weeds" is the term we like to use). If you shut the car down after it's run for a bit and restart, the battery has a charge on it, and the warm engine is easier to start, so your starting voltages are higher. The EDU gets properly reset, and all is well.
If this is what's happening in your case, the next step is no cranking some cold morning.
