When you say the battery was dry, do you mean it had no power to crank the engine, or was there no water in it?
If there is no water in it, then yes, the battery may be the problem, or your charging system overcharged the battery. Either way, a new batter is called for, and have the system checked.
Let's assume the battery was just dead, but still had water. Was the battery light in the dash on? If so, the alternator wasn't charging the battery, and after a while it was drained down.
OK - no battery light while driving - try this - turn the car to ON, but don't start it. You SHOULD see a battery light on the dash, along with a bunch of other lights. No battery light? Then the bulb is burned out OR the wire to the back of the alternator is broken. The bad part about this is that if that light is out or the wire falls off, you won't charge the battery AND you get no indication.
So - if the battery is really out of water, replace it and have your charging system fixed. If the battery is just dead, get a charge on it, then turn the car to ON but don't start - see if you see the battery light.
Of course, the engine may be stalling for other reasons, but this is a start.
