Hi folks!
I just started working on some mods and encountered an odd sound.
The rundown: First, I am partway through modifying the APC to match the Saab 185 box, and have set the pots, but NOT installed the new resistors yet. Seems to drive fine, except for this chattering sound on heavy acceleration. (see below)
Second, I adjusted the wastegate to get the 6psi base boost (I have no idea how to check how close to 6psi I am though -- can someone tell me where to hook a vacuum gauge to and what it should read?) I gave it two and 1/2 turns in, because my boost gauge wasn't showing anywhere near half yellow with my foot to the floor (before mods).
Third, I flipped around the one way valve that goes to the vacuum advance on the distributor, since someone had it reversed (I think). From what I understand, it should advance the timing when it gets vacuum and when I found it, it reversed and was preventing vacuum from reaching the advance diaphram at all! If I'm way off, someone please set me straight on this.
I noticed that putting my foot down on the pedal, when I start boosting I get a tinny rattling sound. Its kinda a tinny high pitch chatter of sorts -- kinda like valve clatter (could it be?). The car didn't do this before the mods, so I'm wondering what it could be.
Could it be that my incomplete mod to the APC box is causing the solenoid (the one by the radiator with the three hoses) to flutter alot and make that noise? The only other thing I can think of is that now the wastegate is moving alot more than it did, and that it might be rattling around in the throttle body (how do I fix that, if that's what it be??)
I want to get rid of the sound... any ideas? :-)
Sorry so long and complicated, but I wanted to make sure to include everything I did to the car when the noise happened! Thanks!!
