Had an ecxeedingly difficult time while trying to remove the pulley for a timing chain replacement. Tried a number of things, including transmission in gear, then wife or two-by-four on brake pedal, then starter impulse shock with johnson bar plus extension wedged against ground. Nothing worked (I had never had so much difficulty before, either in 9kt's or other Saabs). Finally, I made simple jig by welding a piece of quarter inch plate to an eighteen inch length of 1.5 inch square tube. I cut a slot in the plate to clear the pulley nut, and drilled two holes to correspond to the threaded holes in the pulley (Note: the pulley on our other 9kt does not have these holes!!).
The square tube could then be slid into a frame member just aft of the axle, and the welded-on plate bolted to the pulley. I then broke a 3/4 to 1/2 inch reducer while pulling on a four foot extension. So, I went 3/4 inch all the way, and used a non-metric socket - can't remember the size, but the fit was not bad. Looong extension, and about 120 degrees before the nut was considered loose. Must have been well locktighted, and/or grossly overtoqued.
I'm certain this case is unusual, but now I have yet one more Saab special homemade tool.
This tool is really quite simple, and the picture would be worth a lot of words. As soon as I do the research, I'll get a digital camera and avoid much of the verbiage. (Suggestions for cameras under $500 that would do the job are welcome!)
